Garmin eTrex GPS:
Garmin have updated and replaced the original eTrex with the eTex H. Fundamentally the same but features a high-sensitivity receiver which acquires faster and performs better under tree cover etc. It's one of the smallest, cheapest and most basic receivers available it's more than up to the job for kayak diving. It's compact, rugged, simple and is as accurate as any of the current crop. You could spend a lot more money on a posh hand-held colour chart plotter with on-board mapping but with regard to accuracy, it wouldn't be any better. With regard to functions, the eTrex does all the standard stuff:- Location, waypoints, single-point go-to, multi-point routing, tracklog etc. Direct PC connection via serial port and cable or USB with adapter.

GOOD: Lightweight, small, rugged, simple, sub 10m accuracy and long battery life.
BAD: Small screen and readouts can be tricky to see in rougher or wet conditions. The eTrex H is still serial port only and although serial/usb adapters are available for use with usb only (laptops) computers these adapters won't work with any Windows operating system after XP.
REMEMBER: Simple is often best.
