They're not indended as a distress signal but will aid your location when used in conjunction with other signals or devices. There are loads of el-cheapo shite strobes available but why anyone would spend even a small amount of money on something that won't work when it's needed is a mystery. Fortunately there are some really good ones available as well and one of the best small ones is the Aqua-strobe from Princeton Tec.

PRINCETON TEC AQUA-STROBE
It's small, light, robust, submersible and runs for around eight hours on a single AA battery. It's suppied with an alkaline one but for long term reliability it's best to replace this with a lithium.
